Cllr Gurdial Bhamra confirmed as Redbridge’s Mayor-Elect

6 Jan

I am delighted to learn that my colleague Cllr Gurdial Bhamra has today been confirmed as the Mayor-Elect. The announcement was made to Members by our new Executive Director stating:

In accordance with the procedure agreed by Council at its meeting on 19th November 2009, I am writing to inform you that the closing date for receiving nominations for the position of Mayor in 2016/17 has expired. One Member, Councillor Bhamra, has been nominated for the position of Mayor in 2016/17.

As was the case last year, there is just one nomination and therefore the requirement for a ballot to determine between competing candidates is unnecessary and Councillor Bhamra will be known as Mayor-Elect.

In a previous career Councillor Bhamra served for 31 years in the Police force and was amongst Britain’s first BAEM Police Inspectors. He has also served as Chair of ROTA (Race On The Agenda), Ekta (supporting and engaging older and vulnerable people), Metropolitan Police Sikh Association (Founder Member and Chair), Race Alliance and many more.

Councillor Bhamra will be taking over the reins as Mayor of Redbridge from Councillor Barbara White at his inauguration at a special full council meeting due to be held later this year.
